Epidemic alert in Bangladesh: dengue fever

According to a report by an India-based newspaper, the south of the capital, Dhaka, is struggling with dengue fever. 

'17 THOUSAND PEOPLE HOSPITALIZED'

Since the beginning of the year, 97 people have died from dengue fever nationwide and 16,285 people have been hospitalized. Dhaka's southern region has been recorded as the most affected region by dengue fever. As of September, most of the mosquito-borne disease cases were concentrated in the south of the city, accounting for more than 25 percent of the total cases reported nationwide this year. Authorities reported that more than half of the deaths occurred in the southern region of Dhaka. So far, 4,201 cases have been reported in the city's southern region, and 58 people have lost their lives.

WHAT IS DENGUE FEVER?

The disease, which emerges in tropical and subtropical regions and is transmitted to humans through mosquitoes, usually causes a mild fever after the incubation period and can lead to death in some cases. Cases usually increase during the months of March, June, September, and December, known as the "rainy season." Scientists warn that high temperatures and prolonged rainfall can lead to an increase in the number of mosquitoes carrying malaria and dengue fever.
