Erdoğan announces regulation for teachers and other education staff

President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced in a post on his social media account that a comprehensive regulation regarding violence against teachers and other education staff will be implemented rapidly.

"PENALTIES WILL BE INCREASED BY HALF"

President Erdoğan's post is as follows:

"It is our primary duty to protect our teachers, whose knowledge and values they impart to our children are of vital importance in our country's struggle for development, from all kinds of adversity and to provide them with a comfortable and safe environment in which to practice their profession.

Our teachers, who perform a noble profession and build and revive our future with the generations they raise, are the crown of our heads. As a government that firmly upholds this understanding, we will rapidly implement a comprehensive regulation regarding violence against our teachers and other education staff.

With the regulation that we will submit to our Grand National Assembly as a legislative proposal,

• The penalties stipulated in the penal codes for acts committed against our teachers will be increased by half.

• The suspension of sentences for those who commit these acts will be prevented.

• These acts will be considered grounds for arrest, preventing trial without detention.

• Our teachers and other education staff working in private institutions will also be considered public officials in terms of crimes committed against them due to their duties.

Our teachers should rest assured. We have never remained silent, and we will not remain silent, in the face of acts of violence against our teachers who selflessly carry out such an important profession in every region of our country. On this occasion, I wish God's mercy upon our teacher İbrahim Oktugan, who lost his life as a result of a brutal attack in Istanbul; I extend my condolences to his family, loved ones, students, and our entire education community."
