Erdoğan approves: Surprise appointment for Akın Gürlek's wife

Appointment decisions made by the Presidency have been published in the Official Gazette. 

According to the decision, Mahmut Sütçü was appointed as the second chairman of the Capital Markets Board (SPK), while Mutlu Akın and Elif Gülşah Gürlek were appointed as board members.

REACTION TO THE APPOINTMENT RISES  

CHP Group Deputy Chairs Ali Mahir Başarır and Gökhan Günaydın reacted to the appointment via their social media accounts. Pointing out that Elif Gülşah Gürlek is the wife of Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek, Başarır stated the following:

"The reward for the political operation carried out in Esenyurt has been given to Akın Gürlek. His wife, who was a Deputy Department Head at the Ministry of Justice, has been appointed as a member of the Capital Markets Board. This system is not one of merit, but of loyalty!"

CHP Parliamentary Group Deputy Chair Gökhan Günaydın criticized the appointment with the words, "The High Criminal Court Judge wife of Akın Gürlek, who was appointed from Deputy Minister of Justice to Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor, has been appointed as a member of the Capital Markets Board. The summary of the country in a single sentence."

A CONTROVERSIAL FIGURE: AKIN GÜRLEK 

Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek had served in cases such as the Academics for Peace, Hrant Dink, the Progressive Lawyers Association case, and the seizure of Can Dündar’s assets. Gürlek most recently conducted the investigation regarding the arrest of Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer and the appointment of a trustee in his place, an investigation that was also characterized as political by the opposition.
