Erdoğan detail in lecturer's exam: 'Ask Tayyip', 'Tayyip always wins'

Bülend Nami Nomer, a lecturer in the Department of Economics at Marmara University, is on trial due to humorous answer choices he used in an exam he administered in 2021. 

Cumhuriyet columnist Barış Terkoğlu stated that some questions in the "Introduction to Economics" exam prepared by Nomer caused a crisis by referencing the President. The phrases "Ask Tayyip" and "Tayyip always wins" were included in the exam questions.

INVESTIGATION AND TRIAL PROCESS

These questions, which were shared by students on social media, caused a major stir in a short time. Following the reactions in the media, Marmara University launched an administrative investigation into Nomer.

In the statement made by the university, it was expressed that an inappropriate reference was made to the President and that this situation was an attempt to create a perception among students. Nomer was told to either resign or be dismissed from the university, and the lecturer resigned and retired.

ON TRIAL IN CRIMINAL COURT

Following the administrative investigation, the Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office also intervened and filed a criminal case against Nomer on charges of "insulting the President." The university's investigation board also unanimously decided that a trial should be held. Nomer is currently being tried at the Istanbul Anatolian 11th Criminal Court of First Instance, facing up to 4 years in prison. The next hearing of the case will be held on Thursday.
