Commentary on 'new solution process' from Erdoğan's former speechwriter Aydın Ünal: That photo from Malazgirt is also possible with DEM

Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli shaking hands with DEM Party deputies after his party's parliamentary group meeting has become the number one agenda item in politics in recent days.

When asked about shaking hands with the DEM Party deputies, Bahçeli had replied, "We are entering a new era; while we want peace in the world, we must ensure peace in our own country."

AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, for his part, stated regarding Bahçeli's move toward the DEM Party, "We welcome it and find it valuable. We hope that the hand extended by the People's Alliance will be properly understood by its recipients."

Following these successive developments, debates about a 'new solution process' have begun in politics.

Erdoğan's former speechwriter and former AKP deputy Aydın Ünal evaluated MHP leader Bahçeli's handshake with the DEM Party members in his column in Yeni Şafak.

In his article titled "A new solution process?", Ünal stated that it is possible for the DEM Party to "turn the process into an opportunity" and that the time for this has come, adding, "It will be auspicious for both the DEM and for Turkey if the DEM chooses common sense."

Arguing that a solution process or an implication of a solution process cannot be inferred from the handshake, Ünal's comment regarding the MHP also drew attention. Expressing that the statement made by Devlet Bahçeli after the handshake, "The primary responsibility falling on the DEM is to understand the value of this sincere hand extended, and furthermore, to perceive and evaluate it as a threshold toward becoming a party of Turkey," is "extremely important," Ünal said, "The MHP will make a great contribution to national unity and brotherhood by accepting the Kurdish presence and the Kurdish issue (or the problems of the Kurds)."

Arguing that the photo Bahçeli took with HÜDA PAR Chairman Zekeriya Yapıcıoğlu during the 953rd-anniversary celebrations of the Battle of Malazgirt was a historic step in this direction, Ünal stated, "Now it is also possible for the same photo to be taken with the DEM; provided, of course, that the DEM changes, if it can change."
