Erdoğan intervenes in tension between İsmailağa and Cübbeli Ahmet: Tasks Diyanet President Erbaş

It has been claimed that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan intervened in the tension between the İsmailağa community and Ahmet Mahmut Ünlü, known as 'Cübbeli Ahmet', and tasked Diyanet Affairs President Ali Erbaş with the matter.

Independent Türkçe Editor-in-Chief Nevzat Çiçek stated during the Doğu Batı program, which he moderates on Habertürk, that he had previously learned of the information regarding Ali Erbaş meeting with both sides to try and resolve the issue, and that he was sharing it with the public for the first time.

'PROMISE TO ACT MORE CAREFULLY'

Responding to Çiçek's question, Ahmet Mahmut Ünlü stated that Erbaş had met with them and that they had promised to act more carefully following this meeting.

Ünlü said, "They are not in a position to impose quotas on what to talk about or what not to talk about. They said, 'Let us not make speeches that wear each other down.' We are trying to comply. To the extent that we can."

In a statement made on social media after the program, Nevzat Çiçek wrote the following:

"According to what I have learned, the meeting took place four or five months ago. It was stated that President Erdoğan was uncomfortable with the public debate and tasked the Diyanet Affairs President with understanding the issue and finding a solution, and that Erbaş, who met with the parties, made certain requests from both sides.

It was explained to Erbaş that for İsmailağa to drop the lawsuits filed against Cübbeli Ahmet Hoca, he was expected to apologize publicly regarding certain issues. It is stated that Cübbeli Ahmet Hoca promised to be more careful regarding names, families, etc., as he expressed on the broadcast. As I understand it, both sides have been taking steps to lower the tension since this meeting, but the issue has not been completely resolved."
