In Turkey, no organ or institution, including high courts, is beyond accountability or immune to criticism."
President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke at the Atatürk Commemoration Ceremony organized by the Atatürk Supreme Council of Culture, Language and History. Erdoğan made sharp statements regarding the Constitutional Court (AYM) crisis. Erdoğan said, "If necessary, we will do what is required to ensure such a debate does not arise again, by using all methods, including constitutional and legal amendments."
Highlights from Erdoğan's statements are as follows:
"We are continuing the struggle to elevate our country above the level of contemporary civilizations, which is the legacy of Gazi Mustafa Kemal, with the spirit of the National Struggle. Turkey has suffered greatly from segments we could describe as 'Wardrobe Atatürkists' yesterday and 'Social Media Atatürkists' today.
With the strength we draw from the voice of the collective conscience, we will support the will of the people of Gaza not to leave their homes and lands until the end. We will not stop speaking the truth until the safety of life and property is ensured for all Palestinian people, especially those in Gaza who are struggling to protect their homeland and their lives."
INFLATION STATEMENT
We are determined to solve the cost of living caused by inflation. It is our duty to compensate for the losses of low and middle-income groups whose welfare has eroded.
"WE WILL DO WHAT IS NECESSARY"
"The decisions of judicial institutions can also be debated. In Turkey, no organ or institution, including high courts, is beyond accountability or immune to criticism. The place to resolve the jurisdictional dispute between two judicial institutions is the constitution and the laws. However, our current constitution and laws are insufficient in this regard. The shirt tailored for Turkey by coup plotters 41 years ago is now too tight for 2023 Turkey, despite more than 20 amendments. It has likely been better understood on this occasion that our insistence on keeping the new constitution issue on the agenda is not a matter of daily political rhetoric, but a vital issue. As the head of state, we will rapidly take steps to prevent the disagreement between our institutions from turning into a constitutional and systemic crisis. If necessary, we will do what is required to ensure such a debate does not arise again, by using all methods, including constitutional and legal amendments."
