Erzurum Governor's Office imposes alcohol ban

The Erzurum Governor's Office has banned the consumption of alcohol in public areas within the provincial borders.

The order, published under the signature of Governor Mustafa Çiftçi, included the following statements:

“This decision covers the procedures and principles regarding the prevention of individuals consuming alcohol in public in a manner that disturbs the environment within the borders of Erzurum province. It is intended to prohibit the consumption of alcohol in parks/gardens and picnic and recreation areas open to public use; in the vicinity of educational institutions and student dormitories (within a 200-meter radius); in places of worship and their annexes and gardens (within a 200-meter radius); at bus stations and terminals; in historical and cultural sites (such as bastions, castles, etc.); in abandoned structures, construction sites, and derelict buildings; in cemeteries; and under bridges and in pedestrian underpasses and overpasses. It is intended that those who do not comply with this decision will be processed for violating Article 32 of the Misdemeanors Law No. 5326, provided that the act does not constitute another crime.”

In the statement made by the Governor's Office, it was noted that if “the consumption of alcohol in public in a manner that disturbs the environment is detected,” Article 32 of the Misdemeanors Law will be applied.

Article 32 of the Misdemeanors Law is regulated under the heading “Behavior contrary to orders.” This article covers the sanctions for behavior contrary to an order issued by authorized bodies for the purpose of ensuring public order, safety, or health. As of 2024, an administrative fine is imposed on individuals who do not comply with an order issued lawfully by authorized authorities.
