Eventful congress at the Democrat Party: Flash move from İlay Aksoy, whose candidacy was rejected

The Democrat Party held its 15th Ordinary Congress yesterday (November 17). Gültekin Uysal was re-elected as chairman after receiving the votes of 765 delegates.

Democrat Party General Administrative Board Member İlay Aksoy had announced in a statement on November 15 that she would be a Democrat Party chairmanship candidate against Gültekin Uysal.

The Chairman of the Congress Council announced that some delegates had withdrawn their signatures and that some signatures were deemed invalid. Aksoy's candidacy was not accepted.

Tensions rose at the congress following the rejection of Aksoy's candidacy.

Aksoy reacted by saying, "You have staged a coup against your own party. You have mortgaged the will of so many people. You are no different from the AK Party. You have staged a coup; this party is not like this. Shame on you." Arguments broke out between those supporting İlay and other party members. 

İlay Aksoy made a statement on her social media account following the congress, which was marked by the disputes.

Stating that they would initiate legal proceedings, Aksoy noted the following:

"I stated that signatures were withdrawn as a result of intense pressure at yesterday's Democrat Party 15th Ordinary Congress. 

The fact that Istanbul Provincial Chairman Adem İpek personally said, 'you can exert the same pressure too,' clearly reveals and confesses this situation. 

This congress was held under anti-democratic and irregular conditions. My right to be elected and our delegates' right to vote and their free will have been seized. My team and I will initiate the necessary legal proceedings for the sake of our party's reputation."
