A 4.9-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir in the morning hours. The tremor, which was felt in many provinces, particularly Istanbul and Bursa, sent citizens into the streets. Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Şükrü Ersoy drew attention to the high number of aftershocks, stating, "It is not normal for a 6.1 earthquake to have this many aftershocks. It could be dangerous if the earthquakes in Sındırgı migrate to the Simav fault."

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that a 4.9-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir at 12:35. It was stated that the earthquake was recorded at a depth of approximately 7.72 kilometers.

FELT IN SURROUNDING PROVINCES INCLUDING ISTANBUL AND BURSA

The tremor was felt in Balıkesir as well as in Istanbul, Bursa, İzmir, and Çanakkale. Due to the earthquake, which caused brief panic, citizens quickly exited their homes and workplaces.

PROF. DR. ERSOY: "THIS MANY AFTERSHOCKS IS NOT NORMAL"

Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Şükrü Ersoy made striking assessments regarding the tremor. Speaking to A Haber, Ersoy stated the following:

"Following the day the 6.1 occurred, I had said—again on A Haber—that I predicted this earthquake could continue for days, weeks, or even months. I share the same view. It is one of the earthquakes with a very important and complex mechanism that needs to be studied.

The fault that created this earthquake is almost horizontal. There is also magmatic activity below. When every rupture creates an aftershock, they do not overlap; they are seen over a wide area.

There is also a significant energy release here. The number of aftershocks is not 3-5, but thousands. The total energy of thousands of earthquakes releases a significant amount of ground energy. However, if this progression carries these effects to the north, to the Simav Fault, it could be somewhat dangerous. But the progression does not look like that. It is already abnormal for a 6.1 to have this many aftershocks. It is not right. Therefore, the number of aftershocks is so high that it shows a significant amount of energy is being released. A major earthquake may not occur where these earthquakes are happening; it is likely proceeding that way. But when it moves to the north, we know the linear faults there very clearly."
