Expert report on 'family meeting footage' in Narin Güran murder case submitted to court

Narin Güran, who went missing on August 21 in the Tavşantepe neighborhood of the central Bağlar district and whose lifeless body was found in the Eğertutmaz Stream on September 8, was murdered. Her mother Yüksel, brother Enes, uncle Salim Güran, and neighbor Nevzat Bahtiyar are being tried for "intentional killing of a child in complicity," facing life imprisonment with no possibility of parole.

The footage of a family meeting, which was added to the case file and took place one day before September 8, when Narin's body was found, was examined by the panel of the 8th High Criminal Court where the defendants are being tried.

The court sent the footage, which contains conversations in both Turkish and Kurdish, to the National Criminal Bureau to be transcribed by expert witnesses. The National Criminal Bureau analyzed the footage and submitted the prepared expert report to the Diyarbakır 8th High Criminal Court.

The footage, recorded on a security camera between 19:38 and 19:41, shows a meeting held with the participation of some family members in the garden of uncle Erhan Güran's house in the Tavşantepe neighborhood one day before September 8, when Narin's body was found. The footage was obtained by the Diyarbakır Bar Association and submitted to the Diyarbakır 8th High Criminal Court. The footage, which was viewed by the court panel, had been added to the case file.

The court had previously decided to send the footage, which includes Turkish and Kurdish speech, to the Van Gendarmerie Command Criminal Branch Directorate to be transcribed by expert witnesses.

In the court's decision to also send the footage containing Turkish and Kurdish speech to the National Criminal Bureau for transcription by experts, the following statements were included:

"In the evaluation regarding the video footage obtained in our court's case file numbered 2024/396, it was reported that Kurdish is spoken in the video, the audio is very low, and during consultations with Kurdish language experts in Diyarbakır, it was stated that specialized audio equipment would be required to translate it into Turkish, and that it is not possible to translate it into Turkish in its current state due to the low audio level. Upon this, the National Criminal Bureau, which is expert in its field, was consulted. As it was stated that the conversations could be translated into Turkish using audio equipment, and given the proximity of the hearing date, the video footage was sent to the National Criminal Bureau."
