Extradition to Turkey had been decided: New details reached regarding Eylem Tok and her son... How was the extradition decision reached?

The U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts has issued a detailed statement confirming that a decision has been made to extradite Eylem Tok and Timur C., who were arrested in the U.S. following a fatal traffic accident in Istanbul, to Turkey.

In the District Court's statement, it was noted that the "extradition" of Tok and her son T.C. was decided "in accordance with the extradition treaty between the U.S. and Turkey."

The statement indicated that Eylem Tok has filed an objection to the extradition decision and requested to be released before the extradition procedures are completed.

The court document detailed that Tok, whose extradition is requested by Turkey, went to the scene of the accident in Istanbul involving her son and committed the crimes of "concealing, altering, destroying evidence of a crime, and harboring a criminal."

In the conclusion section of the court's 50-page document, it was stated that "Tok's extradition and request for release on bail have been denied."

EXTRADITION CERTIFICATE TO BE FORWARDED TO U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT IN 7 DAYS

Following the decision regarding Tok and her son, it was reported that an extradition certificate will be prepared by the U.S. government within 7 days at the latest.

The court documents stated that the certificate in question will then be forwarded to the U.S. Department of State, and it is expected that the Department will make the final decision to hand over the matter concerning Tok and her son to the Turkish government.

It was emphasized that during this process, Eylem Tok and Timur C. will continue to be kept in custody.

Furthermore, it was conveyed that the extradition decision was taken in accordance with the Treaty on Extradition and Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters signed between the U.S. and Turkey on June 7, 1979.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On March 1, 2024, in Eyüpsultan, one of three ATV vehicles traveling on the road broke down. While an attempt was being made to repair the broken-down vehicle pulled to the side of the road, one of two vehicles traveling in the same direction struck the three ATVs, and Oğuz Murat Aci, one of the 5 injured people, lost his life.

It was determined that the 17-year-old driver, Timur C., who caused the accident, fled the scene in the vehicle of his mother, Eylem Tok, who had arrived at the scene, and that they went first to Egypt and then to the U.S. with his mother.

The documents for the provisional arrest request for the extradition of the suspects were forwarded to the competent U.S. authorities by the Ministry of Justice, and Minister of Justice Tunç announced in a post on his social media account that Timur C. and his mother Tok had been arrested by the court they appeared before in Boston.
