Facility producing cryptocurrency with illegal electricity discovered in Şanlıurfa

Dicle Elektrik has identified a facility producing cryptocurrency using illegal electricity during operations conducted in the Doğrular neighborhood of Şanlıurfa's Hilvan district. It was determined that the structure, which was built in the middle of a field and hidden with bricks, was connected to the power grid via an illegal 2,500 kVA transformer. The setup drew attention with its daily electricity consumption of 6,000 kWh.

“ILLEGAL ELECTRICITY IS FREQUENTLY PREFERRED FOR CRYPTOCURRENCY PRODUCTION”

In a statement regarding the matter, Dicle Elektrik officials emphasized that the use of illegal electricity is not limited to areas such as agricultural irrigation or air conditioning, but is also commonly seen in cryptocurrency production. The statement included the following remarks:

“The production of cryptocurrencies requires intensive electricity consumption worldwide. According to the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index, approximately 1,450 kWh of energy is spent to produce just one Bitcoin. During the operation we carried out in the Hilvan district of Şanlıurfa, we determined that more than 100 devices were drawing energy from an illegal transformer for cryptocurrency production. This setup not only causes energy loss but also harms social justice and economic sustainability. We will continue our work with innovative technologies to minimize energy losses and ensure sustainable energy management.”

LEGAL PROCESS INITIATED

Dicle Elektrik, which carried out the necessary intervention against the facility operating with illegal electricity, has initiated legal action against the individuals connected to the setup. A criminal complaint has been filed with the prosecutor's office to identify those responsible.
