Fatih Altaylı writes about Ayşe Barım in his latest letter from prison: 'Faith is gradually weakening'

Journalist Fatih Altaylı, currently detained at Silivri Prison, has drawn attention to the health problems of talent manager Ayşe Barım, who is also being held at Silivri in connection with the Gezi Park trial and was not released during yesterday's hearing, stating, "Faith that Barım will leave here alive is gradually weakening." 

Altaylı, highlighting the health issues of Ayşe Barım, whose first hearing took place yesterday, said, "She is fading away every day. The Ayşe Barım I encountered here is half the Barım I saw on the outside. She has lost over 20 kilos; her hands and arms are bruised and blood-clotted. Her face is yellow, and the spark in her eyes has faded. Her mental health has deteriorated just as much as her physical health." 

Altaylı stated the following:

"Days here have fallen into a routine, but interestingly, they pass quickly. This is not a place where detainees can chat with each other as people might think; we can only see and greet other detainees from behind glass during lawyer visits. 

Yesterday, the agenda for all of us in Silivri was Ayşe Barım. Everyone who knew Barım's medical report hoped that she would at least be sent to house arrest. It didn't happen, and everyone was devastated. Those who see her every day are aware of the situation. She is fading away every day. I have no closeness with Barım other than greeting her when we met at social events or restaurants. The Ayşe Barım I encountered here is half the Barım I saw on the outside. She has lost over 20 kilos; her hands and arms are bruised and blood-clotted. Her face is yellow, and the spark in her eyes has faded. Her mental health has deteriorated just as much as her physical health. Her lawyers spend most of the day with her. They fear that if she has a heart or brain aneurysm while alone in her room, she won't be able to call for help. Faith that Barım will leave here alive is gradually weakening.

No one thinks that Barım, who has never displayed a political stance throughout her life, has any connection to Gezi. The idea that there might be other reasons behind the deathly hostile attitude toward her carries more weight. Lawyer Deniz Ketenci also asked at the hearing, by reading the Gezi indictment, how they could link Barım, whose name is not mentioned anywhere, to Gezi 12 years later... The lesson the Barım case shows us is this: being apolitical does not mean that lawlessness will not strike you too... Where there is no law, justice, or democracy, being apolitical is not a salvation!"
