Fatih Erbakan reacts to trustee appointments: It is the public that is being punished
Following Esenyurt, the appointment of trustees in Batman, Mardin, and Halfeti has been met with backlash. New Welfare Party leader Fatih Erbakan also voiced his criticism. Erbakan stated, "Whatever the mistake may be, it is the public that is being punished, and it is the will of the people that is being disregarded."
While reactions continue regarding the appointment of a trustee to replace Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer following his arrest and imprisonment, the Ministry of Interior announced in the early hours of the morning that trustees have also been appointed to Mardin, Batman, and Halfeti.
The appointment of trustees to 4 different municipalities within a few days has been met with backlash across the country, particularly from the opposition. One such reaction came from New Welfare Party leader Fatih Erbakan.
Making a statement via his social media account, Erbakan expressed the following:
'IT IS THE PUBLIC THAT IS BEING PUNISHED'
"The trustee appointments made in the early hours of the morning are nothing more than a repetition of a scenario that has been staged for years. Whatever the mistake of those who nominated these names and those who appointed the trustees may be; it is the public that is being punished, and it is the will of the people that is being disregarded. Both sides must stop opening the curtain on this meaningless game over and over again.
If the problem lies in the laws, let us carry out the necessary legislative changes in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) with urgent regulations. For years, individuals being tried for membership in a terrorist organization have been nominated as candidates. The Supreme Election Council (YSK) legitimizes these candidacies by not objecting. As soon as the elections are concluded, the cases that have been ongoing for years are rapidly brought to a verdict. And as a result, elected mayors are removed from office and replaced by governors and district governors. Both sides of this film are competing with each other to add fuel to the fire that erodes trust in civilian politics.
The correct approach is to ensure that problematic names are not nominated, or if they are, to prevent their candidacies during the YSK process. Furthermore, if a crime requiring removal from office is established after the election, instead of appointing a trustee, the elected municipal councils should elect a new mayor. The way forward for the Republic of Turkey is justice, the rule of law, and respect for the national will. The truly effective way to consistently combat organizations is to act like a deep-rooted state with a history spanning over a thousand years."
