The hearing at the Anatolian 8th High Criminal Court was attended by the defendant, Demir, who is being tried without arrest, and the family of Batın Barlasçeki, who lost his life in the accident, along with the lawyers for both parties.
Demir stated, "I performed the necessary checks and moved forward slowly after being given the right of way. At this point, I believe the fault lies with the motorcycledriver. I request my acquittal. If the court holds a contrary opinion, I request the application of favorableprovisions."I request myacquittal," she said in her defense.
"NEGLIGENT HOMICIDECAUSING DEATH"
Barlasçeki's mother, Hasret Doğan, stated that she wouldnever be able to seeher sonagain. Doğan stated that his son would have turned 18 if he were still alive, adding, "I do not want this to go unpunished when she has caused the loss of a life. I demand that the defendant be punished in the most severe way possible."
Announcingtheverdict, the judge sentenced defendant Demir to 3 years in prison for the crime of "causing death by negligence."The judgeruled.
The judge noted the defendant'spastlife, social relations, her conduct after the incident and during the trialprocess,and the potential impact of the sentence on the defendant's future into consideration,the court decided to apply a discretionary reduction and sentenced the defendant to 2 years and 6 months in prison.
The ruling also ordered that the defendant's driver's license be suspended for 1 year.It was so ordered.
