February 6 post from Ahmet Özer: He revealed it for the first time in years! 'I lost 4 siblings'
Esenyurt's elected mayor, CHP's Ahmet Özer, wrote a piece about the February 6 earthquakes from Silivri Prison, where he is being held. Making a call for Istanbul, Özer stated, "The work we started in our Esenyurt with the motto 'Earthquake-Resilient City' was unfortunately cut short by a political conspiracy imposed upon us."
CHP's Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer, who was arrested and sent to Silivri Prison on allegations of "being a member of the PKK/KCK armed terrorist organization" and replaced by a government-appointed trustee, shared a post on his social media account regarding the February 6 earthquakes.
Calling for Istanbul and Esenyurt to be prepared for earthquakes, Özer stated that he is currently incarcerated due to a political conspiracy and noted that the 'Earthquake-Resilient City' project has been left unfinished.
Özer had lost his siblings in the 1976 Muradiye-Çaldıran earthquake in Van.
Özer wrote the following:
"Today marks the hundredth day of my unjust and unlawful imprisonment in Silivri Prison, and the 2nd anniversary of the February 6 earthquake. First and foremost, I once again extend my condolences to the families and our people, and pray for God's mercy upon all our citizens who lost their lives in the earthquake.
The earthquake did not just destroy buildings. It left deep marks on our souls and caused irreparable wounds. With every tremor, I feel closer to my siblings... Because they were lost in an earthquake..
As someone who lost four siblings in an earthquake, I would like to say that it is in our hands not to turn natural disasters into catastrophes. We all have important duties, especially those who govern the country. Therefore, we must work with a spirit of great mobilization to create cities that are resilient against potential earthquake(s). To achieve this, we must prepare not just by remembering earthquakes on their anniversaries, but by taking precautions against them every single day.
The work we started in our Esenyurt with the motto 'Earthquake-Resilient City' was unfortunately cut short by a political conspiracy imposed upon us.
We will continue to do everything in our power to prepare our Istanbul and our Esenyurt for earthquakes, to learn from the painful experiences of the past, and to ensure we do not experience the same pain again.
Get well soon, Turkey.
Let us not forget, it is in our hands not to turn disasters into catastrophes.."
