Femicide in Bursa: A woman killed by her husband once again

While debates continue over the fact that laws are failing to protect women following the withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention, a new femicide is added to the list every day.

A female dentist who was shot by her husband, from whom she was in the process of divorcing, in the Osmangazi district of Bursa has lost her life at the hospital.

On Yalman Street in the Bağlarbaşı neighborhood, Atilla Ç. fired a handgun at his wife, Yasemin Ç., with whom he was in the process of divorcing, as she was leaving the house.

Atilla Ç. fled the scene.

Bystanders who heard the gunshots notified the police and medical teams.

Yasemin Ç., who was taken to Çekirge State Hospital by medical teams arriving at the scene, lost her life despite all interventions.

In the initial post-mortem examination, it was reported that as a result of the investigation, it was observed that 1 bullet grazed the face of Yasemin Ç. and entered through the left neck area, but no exit wound was found, and a classic autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

Police apprehended the fleeing Atilla Ç. along with the handgun he used in the incident. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

A statement regarding the matter was issued by the Public Security Branch Directorate. The statement read:

"Following the report to the dispatch center regarding a shooting incident at the address, investigations revealed that the victim, identified as Yasemin ÇETİN, was wounded in the upper left shoulder area. She was transported to Çekirge State Hospital by a 112 ambulance, where she could not be saved and was pronounced dead at approximately 12:34.

The victim and the suspect had been officially married for 23 years. There was a divorce case filed 1.5 years ago due to domestic discord. There are 15 incident records between the individuals from 2023 to the present, and 12 violation records (domestic discord/stalking, Law No. 6284). A request was made by the victim for the suspect to be fitted with an electronic monitoring bracelet in December 2023, but it was rejected by the court. There has been a restraining order in effect for 6 months starting from 03.08.2024. The suspect has previously served time in prison twice for violating the protection order. The last incident record between the individuals was on 13.06.2024.

The suspect, identified as Atilla Çelik, was apprehended by the Homicide Bureau teams in the Fethiye neighborhood of the Nilüfer district.

During his interview, the suspect stated that there was a divorce case and discord between him and the victim, that they were having problems regarding the division of property, that he saw her photos on her TikTok social media yesterday, and that he went to the scene at the time of the incident to talk, committed the act there, and fled in a vehicle with license plate 16 L 0700.

The handgun used in the incident was found at the scene and was collected by crime scene investigation teams.

The investigation into the matter is being conducted by the Homicide Bureau," the statement concluded.
