Femicides: 315 women lost their lives in 2023
According to the "Femicide and Suspicious Female Death Facts Report" shared by the We Will Stop Femicide Platform, 315 women were victims of murder in 2023. Of these women, 28 had protection orders in place.
Istanbul - The We Will Stop Femicide Platform, has released its "Femicide and Suspicious Female Death Facts Report" for the year 2023.According to the report, last year 315 women were victims of murder, and 28 of these women were under protection orders.
Women's Assemblies It was stated that shameful statistics were shared at the press conference organized by the platform. According to the platform's data, 308 women lost their lives in 2018, 360 in 2019, 300 in 2020, 280 in 2021, and 334 in 2022. Suspicious female deaths also increased at an alarming rate, reaching 131 in 2018, 115 in 2019, 170 in 2020, 217 in 2021, and 245 in 2022.
While it was stated that 315 women died due to male violence in 2023, 248 of these deaths were recorded as suspicious. 41 percent of the women were killed by the men they were married to. The use of weapons reached an alarming level; 55 percent of femicides were committed with firearms, and 31 percent with sharp objects. 65 percent of these murders took place at home, and 18 percent occurred on the street.
According to the report, 35 percent of the murdered women were between the ages of 19 and 35, and 10 percent of the perpetrators had a criminal record. Fidan Ataselim, General Secretary of the We Will Stop Femicide Platform, stated the following regarding the issue: "Women are being killed by those closest to them and with weapons. Violence is within us, coming from those closest to us. It is possible to stop violence, but this requires the effective implementation of existing laws" she said. Emphasizing that violence can be stopped at the first signs through the effective implementation of Law No. 6284, Ataselim added, "Then it would not end in femicide."
