Final call for those using old-style driver's licenses

Time is running out for the chip-enabled driver's license system, which has been in effect across Turkey since 2016. The Ministry of Interior emphasized that old-model driver's licenses will become invalid as of the evening of July 31, 2025, and invited approximately 4 million citizens currently driving with old-style licenses to apply urgently.

It is recommended to complete the procedures by making an appointment at the Directorates of Population and Citizenship Affairs to avoid congestion. In its statement, the Ministry warned citizens not to leave their procedures until the last day.

SHOCK OF HIGH FEES FOR DRIVERS WHO DO NOT RENEW

With only one month left to obtain a new-style, chip-enabled driver's license, a significant cost increase is on the horizon for those still on the road with old-style licenses. Those who do not apply within the specified period will have to pay 7,438 TL when they want to renew their licenses after August 1, 2025. Officials also underline that the deadline will not be changed this time. Reports indicate that appointment density at population directorates is increasing every day.

HEAVY PENALTIES FOR THOSE CAUGHT DRIVING WITHOUT APPLYING

Those who do not make their applications on time and continue to drive with their old-style licenses will both be prohibited from traffic and fined for "driving without a license." The penalty in question will be applied as an administrative fine.

Finally, the Ministry of Interior reiterated its warnings to citizens to complete their procedures as soon as possible to avoid any grievances. Those who wish to renew their driver's licenses can start their procedures by making an appointment via Alo 199 or online.
