Finger severed in workplace accident lost at hospital

The ring finger of 50-year-old Mehmet Uzun, who suffered severed fingers in a workplace accident in the Ereğli district of Zonguldak, has gone missing in the operating room.

Mehmet Uzun, a 50-year-old shipyard worker employed at the Ereğli Gemi company, had a heavy hatch fall onto his right hand.

Mehmet Uzun, whose 3 fingers were severed, was taken to Ereğli State Hospital with the help of his colleagues, but was transferred to Ankara by ambulance in the early hours of the morning because there was no microsurgery specialist in Zonguldak.

Upon being transferred to Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Hospital, it was discovered just as he was about to be taken into surgery that his ring finger, the only one in a condition to be reattached, was missing.

While medical personnel working in the Emergency Department of Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine stated that they had seen the severed finger, operating room staff claimed it had never reached them.

'WE WILL INITIATE LEGAL PROCEEDINGS'

Mehmet Uzun's daughter, Gülsena Uzun, stated that they would file a complaint against the hospital staff who lost her father's finger, saying, "Two of my father's three severed fingers had sustained such heavy damage that they could not be reattached. For this reason, the Coast Guard did not hand those two fingers over to us. The third severed finger, however, was lost in the operating room. No one can explain the situation to us. We will initiate legal proceedings. I will seek justice for my father to the fullest extent."
