The first lesson in Istanbul schools on April 28: Disaster Awareness Training

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake recently occurred in Istanbul.

Following the earthquake, the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education made a new decision and issued important statements.

"DISASTER AWARENESS TRAINING" WILL BE CONDUCTED

The Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education has decided that the first lesson in all public and private schools across the city on Monday, April 28, will be conducted as "Disaster Awareness Training."

In the statement made by the Directorate, it was noted that within the scope of the training, students will be taught correct behavioral patterns during earthquakes and other disasters, and basic information such as the "drop-cover-hold on" practice, preparation of disaster and emergency kits, and the importance of assembly areas will be shared.

"WE AIM TO RAISE INDIVIDUALS PREPARED FOR DISASTERS"

Provincial Director of National Education Murat Mücahit Yentür, whose views were included in the statement, drew attention to the importance of being prepared for disasters.

Stating that they have designated the first lesson in all public and private schools in the city on Monday, April 28, as "Disaster Awareness Training," Yentür used the following expressions:

Our main goal here is to emphasize that education is the most important aspect regarding potential disasters. Through awareness-raising efforts, we aim to both reduce disaster risks and raise individuals who are prepared for disasters. We keep disaster awareness constantly alive as a natural part of our education and training process. On Monday, together with our teachers, we will conduct an awareness study that will ensure our children learn the measures that can be taken before, during, and after a disaster.

16-HOUR CERTIFIED PROGRAM

Stating that disaster awareness will not be limited to students, Yentür noted the following:

In the coming process, until the end of the year, we will include all our School Parent Association presidents and board members in the 'Disaster Awareness Training' module prepared by the General Directorate of Lifelong Learning of our Ministry of National Education. With this 16-hour certified program, we aim to make our families more conscious about disasters as well.

As an educational community, we will continue our work with determination, without forgetting that we are a strong family that always manages to be of one heart in extraordinary situations such as disasters.
