First statement from arrested Ahmet Özer: I will hold those responsible for these cheap lies accountable

Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer was arrested after being detained as part of an investigation launched on the allegation of "being a member of the PKK/KCK armed terrorist organization."

Following his arrest, Özer made a statement on his social media account.

Özer's statement is as follows:

"My dear fellow citizens of Esenyurt,

My dear nation,

On the very first day we entered the second century of our Republic, we unfortunately faced an operation directed at me, our Esenyurt municipality, and naturally, the Republican People's Party, the founder of our Republic.

This operation, carried out through me and which I see as part of a chain, is based on baseless and unfounded allegations. I have served this country for years as a public official and as a faculty member. I have raised numerous students. I have always strived for the Republic of Turkey to be a prosperous and democratic country. And I will continue to strive.

Today, as Mayor, I am perhaps the Mayor of the district with the biggest problems in Turkey. In a short time, we have signed off on important and major projects that solve the problems of our Esenyurt people. We will soon share with you our seven-month work pace, what we have added to Esenyurt, and our populist, fair, and investment-oriented efforts.

At no point in my life have I had any involvement with terrorist activities or organizations that could be associated with them. I am an academic of the Republic. As for the Kurdish Issue, I have always had views and solution proposals, and I have shared these with the public not in secret, but through books and articles.

Following my unjust imprisonment, I see the slanders fabricated behind my back by those who call themselves journalists, researchers, communicators, etc. Let no one have any doubt that I will hold those responsible for these cheap lies accountable before the law.

Integrity is important. As you can see, those who engage in character assassination and make despicable statements emerge while I am in prison. Because integrity and humanity have never crossed their threshold. They have not received that upbringing from their families. That is why they will answer for their slanders.

Finally, I would like to state to the people of Esenyurt that I miss them very much and that I am excited to return to our old days. Do not worry at all, these days will pass. Rights, law, and justice will prevail!"
