First statement from DEM on the 'White Toros' burning incident! 'As the process drags on...'

The National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Commission, established in the TBMM as part of the new reconciliation process, held its fourth meeting yesterday.

Shortly before the commission meeting, an individual set a white Toros vehicle on fire in front of the TBMM. The suspect has been arrested.

The DEM Party front issued a statement regarding this act, which took place before the commission meeting.

DEM Party Spokesperson Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit, in a press conference held at the TBMM, stated the following regarding the schedule of the commission established for the reconciliation process:

"There is no definitive calendar, friends. Let us state that, but we met with the Speaker of the Parliament and his office yesterday. There is a general approach that these hearings will continue until mid-September.

Because this week, as you can see, institutions with a say in this process, rights organizations, and relatives of victims are being heard. For next week, there is likely a schedule for hearing economic institutions, unions, and bar associations—that is, legal organizations—and then it will continue gradually in this manner.

Later, there is a general approach toward inviting academics, individuals, and figures who have worked in this field and on conflict resolution, but we have not yet consolidated all these institutions. We have not conducted a joint discussion, but there is a forecast that these hearings will continue until mid-September. At least, I express this as it was shared with us by our Speaker of the Parliament yesterday. Of course, there may be changes.

It could perhaps be moved a week earlier or a week later. We proposed to the Speaker of the Parliament that we program this together. We suggested planning both the creation of the list of institutions to be heard and the determination of the schedule together. We will discuss this with him again."

"WHITE TOROS" STATEMENT

Speaking about the white Toros burning incident, Koçyiğit said that as the process drags on, it will become more open to provocations.

Stating that those who should take responsibility are the government, the Ministry of Interior, and the security bureaucracy, Koçyiğit said:

"Regarding this white Toros issue, frankly, let me say this. The Speaker of the Parliament also made a statement yesterday. Ultimately, we have always said this on this matter.

Currently, there is an official statement made by the Ministry of Interior. Frankly, we do not possess any different information, but we must know this: This process needs to be conducted healthily. For this process to be conducted healthily, it should not be spread over a very long period in a real sense.

We must underline that everything spread over time is open to provocation, everything spread over time decays, and becomes susceptible to sabotage. We are well aware of the fact that in this country, there are segments that do not want a solution, just as there are those who do.

Everyone needs to be vigilant, everyone needs to take responsibility, and everyone needs to act sensitively on this matter, but of course, the greatest responsibility falls on the government, the Ministry of Interior, and, of course, the security bureaucracy. Frankly, the responsibility for taking preventive measures on this matter lies with them."
