Following backlash over 'pajama' comparison, sports uniforms to be redesigned
The Turkish National Paralympic Committee has issued a statement regarding the uniforms our athletes will wear at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will take place on August 28.
The Turkish National Paralympic Committee (TMPK) stated that they will take action to redesign the uniforms that national athletes will wear at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
In a written statement from the committee, it was pointed out that the opening ceremonies of the Olympic and Paralympic Games are a visual feast in terms of culture for the participating countries, and it was noted, "Some countries participate in this visual and cultural spectacle with their traditional clothing, while others use creations from their own fashion brands that they have integrated with their own identities. From the United States to Mongolia, from France to Italy, and even small Pacific island nations, every country has been participating in opening ceremonies for decades with creations that reflect their own culture and traditions."
Stating that the uniforms prepared for the opening of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games caused reactions in the public, the following was recorded:
"In this context, although our committee had no involvement in the process of determining the uniforms to be used at the Paralympic Games opening ceremony, we were also saddened by such a situation. We hope that in the future, the consultation mechanism with our committee will be operated much earlier and more effectively for the Paralympic Games. All efforts in this process have been made with the aim of representing our country in the best possible way on international platforms. We would like to announce that our Paralympic Committee will take action as soon as possible for new uniforms that will represent our country in the best way, keeping the rights and comfort of our athletes at the forefront. In the event that this process cannot be completed healthily in the very limited time remaining, our committee has also deemed it appropriate for our Paralympic athletes to participate in the opening ceremony wearing sports equipment that are products of Turkey's special collection, featuring our sponsor's designs. We thank you for your understanding and wish all our athletes success."
The opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will take place on August 28.
WHAT HAPPENED
The uniforms worn by our national athletes at the opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympics had become a subject of debate on social media. While many people did not like the uniforms in question, veteran journalist Uğur Dündar made an ironic post with the comment, "I am seeing our Olympic pride Busenaz Sürmeli and Mete Gazoz in their pajamas for the first time..."
