Following Cemil Tugay, Deputy Mayor Yıldır also leaves CHP
Following the announcement by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay that he is resigning from his party to continue his duties as an independent, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Zafer Levent Yıldır has also announced his intention to leave the party.
The process in İzmir began with the CHP Central Executive Board (MYK) dismissing İzmir Provincial Chair Çağatay Güç and his administration, and appointing Utku Gümrükçü in his place.
In response to the appointment decision, 30 district chairs in the city adopted a stance criticizing the headquarters' attitude.
In his statement regarding the reasoning behind his resignation decision, Metropolitan Deputy Mayor Yıldır stated that they would focus on their administrative duties at the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality.
Yıldır used the following expressions regarding the decision he made:
"At the point the party has reached, we will no longer deal with party affairs but with our own duties. Our mayor is resigning; as the Deputy Mayor of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, our duty is to stand by our mayor, and this is what befits us."
Resignation decision also from council members and district mayors
According to the report in Cumhuriyet, the wave of resignations in the city was not limited to the metropolitan administration. While it was learned that some CHP district mayors also decided to leave the party, it was reported that CHP council members Mustafa Özuslu and Atilla Baysak were also among those who resigned. Following these decisions taken by Cemil Tugay and the successive council members, how the local bureaucracy will be affected by the process is being monitored.
