Footage of the autopsy of Münevver Karabulut's killer, Cem Garipoğlu, from 2014 was released in recent days. Following that footage, the final images of Garipoğlu in his cell have emerged.

According to a report by Mustafa Sait Özkan from Sabah, both camera footage and details regarding how Garipoğlu spent his time in prison and what he did shortly before he allegedly committed suicide have been obtained.

According to information included in the investigation file regarding whether Garipoğlu, who allegedly committed suicide on October 10, 2014, actually died, Garipoğlu was taken to the Silivri No. 5 L-Type Closed Penal Execution Institution on October 24, 2011. For security reasons, he was placed in the F Block F9 upper block cell for a period. On December 1, 2011, upon his request, he was moved to the F Block F3 lower cell.

FOR SECURITY REASONS

Garipoğlu shared his cell in Silivri with other inmates serving sentences in the same prison until January 10, 2013, but from that date on, he was moved to the F Block F3 lower cell alone due to security reasons and his own request. Garipoğlu's cell contained 3 living rooms, 1 hobby room, 1 kitchen, and a courtyard.

All camera recordings showing the entrances and exits of the cell and its interior on October 9 and October 10, 2014, the date Garipoğlu allegedly committed suicide, were taken into judicial custody. The cameras did not cover the private living areas or the kitchen; they only showed the entrances and exits to the compartments, the corridor outside and inside the cell, and the courtyard connected to the kitchen.

MET WITH HIS MOTHER AND FATHER

On October 9, one day before his suicide, Garipoğlu gave the morning count at 08:11. Due to the Eid al-Adha holiday, he was taken from his cell by guards for an open visit with his mother and father from 10:50 to 11:42 and then returned.

GUARDS CHECKED

When Garipoğlu was brought back to his cell at 11:42, he had his lunch while in the cell and walked around the cell and the courtyard for a while after the meal. Around 14:30, he returned to his cell and received the food provided through the hatch. He continued his life within the compartments of the cell until the evening hours. He gave the evening count at 20:07.

Guards came to the cell and checked the interior through the hatch around 01:50 at night. At that time, Garipoğlu was washing dishes in the kitchen. He stuck his head out to answer the guards who came to the door. The statements taken and the camera footage were consistent with this sequence of events.

TOOK THE STOOL AND CLOSED THE DOOR

According to the camera footage, on the night connecting October 9 to October 10, Garipoğlu, who paced in the corridor for a while, completely closed the door of the 3rd compartment at 03:09. Four minutes later, Garipoğlu took the stool located in the corridor, went into the 3rd compartment, and closed the door again. He did not come out again. During this time, according to the camera recordings, no one entered or left the cell in the courtyard, inner, or outer corridor footage.

FOUND IN ROOM NUMBER 3

Correctional officers came to the cell for the October 10 morning count and called out. However, Garipoğlu did not respond. The guards who entered found Garipoğlu lying on the floor in room number 3 with a plastic bag over his head, a red knotted nylon laundry rope around his neck, shirtless, and wearing sweatpants. The officers immediately notified the infirmary and 112 emergency health teams. During the health check, it was determined that Garipoğlu had passed away.

THERE WAS NO SUSPICIOUS SITUATION

According to the examinations conducted inside the cell, room number 1 was left by Garipoğlu with a movable table blocking the front. No suicide note or suspicious situation was found during the search of this room. In room number 2, Garipoğlu's bed and personal belongings were found. Detailed searches also revealed textbooks and personal items there.

In the search of room number 3, the room where Garipoğlu allegedly committed suicide, there was an empty painting canvas, paints, an empty bunk bed without a mattress, and some items on top of it. All items deemed suspicious were seized and taken into custody. Room number 4 contained cleaning supplies.

LEFT NO SUICIDE NOTE

The entire cell was searched in detail while being recorded on camera. Even the trash in the cell was searched, and no suicide note was found. Crime scene investigation experts mapped the scene. The emergency call buttons in all compartments were also in working order. The search was recorded in a report. At the same time, no signs of a struggle, fight, or altercation were found inside the cell.

COMPATIBLE WITH HIS DNA

Evidence collected from the cell and from Garipoğlu was examined by the Istanbul Criminal Police Laboratory Directorate and the Council of Forensic Medicine. It was concluded that the genotype of the evidence collected from the cell and from Garipoğlu was compatible with the characteristics obtained from Garipoğlu at the time the murder was committed in 2009. No other DNA was found. DNA samples taken from his mother and father also came back clean.

MET WITH A PSYCHOLOGIST 33 TIMES

According to the information obtained, Cem Garipoğlu had a total of 33 individual sessions with a psychologist from January 1, 2009, the date he first entered prison, until October 10, 2014. Regarding his health problems, he was referred to urology and psychiatry departments for treatment. He was sent to his routine check-ups on time.

THE LAST PSYCHOLOGIST HE MET: THERE WAS NO NEGATIVE SITUATION

Garipoğlu was kept under observation by being regularly taken for individual interviews by social workers and institutional psychologists. No negative situation was encountered in the records kept regarding his individual psychologist sessions.

The last institutional psychologist Garipoğlu met with stated in his testimony that there was no negativity reflected by Garipoğlu that could have led to his death.

Garipoğlu did not have any antidepressants or medication prescribed by psychiatry departments that he used continuously before he passed away. Records also show that he requested the cancellation of the antidepressant medication he was using in a petition he wrote on December 26, 2013.

EDUCATION STATUS ADDED TO THE FILE

Garipoğlu's education status while in prison was also included in the investigation file. Having completed Open Education High School, Garipoğlu was continuing his studies in the Business Administration Department of the Open Education Faculty. It was also recorded that he last participated in activities carried out by the prison's education unit on October 1, 2013.

He even participated in painting course activities at the workshop in F Block held between October 4, 2013, and December 30, 2014. Garipoğlu, who also attended the debate and film screening organized by the education unit on March 10, 2014, also participated in the conference held on the same date and the film screening on April 18.

MET WITH CLERGYMEN

One of the most striking pieces of data included in the investigation file was that Garipoğlu also met with clergymen working in the prison within the last month before he committed suicide. Within the scope of the statements taken from the institution's preachers, it was noted that no negative situation occurred during these meetings, just as with the psychologists.

NO REQUESTS

Garipoğlu used his weekly phone calls to speak with his mother and father. He last spoke with his mother by phone on October 6, 2014, five days before his suicide. The phone call records for the last 2 months were also examined, but no negative situation was encountered.

He carried out his routine weekly closed and monthly open visits. No negative situation was reported to the institution by his family or previous cellmates. He had no written or verbal requests to the institution regarding special visits or any problems.

1-HOUR MEETING WITH HIS MOTHER AND FATHER

His last face-to-face meeting with his mother and father was the open visit he had on October 9, 2014, due to the Eid al-Adha holiday, one day before the day he allegedly committed suicide. He met with his mother and father for 1 hour. According to the records, there was no negative situation during the meeting. The 3rd name on the 3-person visitor list was his cousin. He had last met with him on April 25, 2014.

HIS MOTHER BROUGHT THAT BAG 20 DAYS AGO

Garipoğlu brought the bag he put over his head while committing suicide into the cell along with the items given to him by his mother on September 19, 2014. The moments when the bag full of clothes was handed over were recorded on camera. He obtained the nylon laundry rope found around his neck on February 20, 2014. It was determined from the canteen receipt records that he requested and purchased 2 laundry ropes on this date.

EXHUMATION WILL SOLVE THE KNOT

Following allegations regarding whether Garipoğlu died or not, the Karabulut family requested the exhumation of Cem Garipoğlu's grave. However, the request was rejected by both the prosecutor's office and the Ministry of Justice.

Cem Garipoğlu's father, Nida Garipoğlu, also requested from the prosecutor's office in recent months that the grave be opened to put an end to the debates. The Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, which is conducting the investigation, requested that the photos and video recordings of the procedures performed during Cem Garipoğlu's autopsy be prepared by the Istanbul Council of Forensic Medicine and sent to the prosecutor's office, and appointed an expert to the file.

The expert watched the autopsy footage, transcribed it, and submitted it to the prosecutor's office. The decision the prosecutor's office will make regarding whether or not to exhume Garipoğlu's grave will solve the knot.
