Forensic Medicine report on Murat Çalık's health status released: No obstacle found

The report prepared by the Council of Forensic Medicine stated, "Based on the current medical documents, examinations, and clinical findings in Mehmet Murat Çalık's file, no health-related obstacle has been identified that would prevent him from remaining in prison conditions, provided that his treatment and recommended regular outpatient check-ups are maintained."

The report prepared by the Council of Forensic Medicine noted that Çalık was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML-M4) at Marmara University Hospital in December 1999 and received 4 courses of chemotherapy between January and June 2000. It also stated that on April 17, 2002, the Turkish Armed Forces assessed him as "unfit for military service."

It was noted that Çalık underwent surgery for a tumor (mucoepidermoid carcinoma) in his right salivary gland at Marmara University Hospital in January 2008, and that the most recent evaluation by the Medical Oncology Clinic of İzmir City Hospital found no evidence of recurrence or metastasis regarding the salivary gland tumor.

The opinion stated that a health board report issued by Beylikdüzü State Hospital on April 25, 2023, regarding Çalık, concluded that "there is no medical objection to him obtaining a license to possess or carry a firearm."

The admission and discharge records of the Hematology Clinic at İzmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital between June 23 and July 8, 2025, included findings that "the blast count was around 4-5 percent, no atypical (abnormal) cells were observed in the bone marrow imprint evaluation, the blast ratio was 1-2 percent in flow cytometry analysis, the biopsy taken from the neck on July 4 resulted in a traumatic neuroma (benign), and the polyps detected in the stomach during endoscopic biopsy were benign."

"NO CONDITION REQUIRING CLINICAL ADMISSION"

The opinion also included the July 14, 2025, report from İzmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital. According to the report, "the patient, who was brought in on July 9 due to complaints of chest pain, had a normal EKG, blood values (troponin) within normal limits, was admitted to the coronary intensive care unit, and during follow-ups, the chest pain did not recur and no rhythm disturbance was observed."

The opinion stated that it was decided to discharge Çalık, as there was no condition requiring his continued stay in the Cardiology Clinic based on the current findings.

In the board examination conducted on July 16, 2025, it was noted that Çalık had recent complaints of weight loss and loss of appetite, that his sleep and appetite were not very good, and that he walked for 15-20 minutes. The report stated that his general condition was good, he was conscious, oriented, and cooperative, could mobilize without support, and had full range of motion in all four extremities.

During the board examination, it was recorded that Çalık's muscle strength was full, he could climb stairs, his blood pressure was 140/70, and his pulse and temperature were normal. The report noted no signs of bruising, jaundice, or shortness of breath, no evidence of rapid weight loss, and that his circulatory, abdominal, and respiratory system examinations were natural. Furthermore, no active psychopathology was detected in his psychiatric examination.

The board provided the opinion that "when the individual's bone marrow aspiration, flow cytometry, and bone marrow biopsy are considered together, the blast ratio is evaluated at 3-4 percent; however, because the biopsy passed through the cortical and subcortical area, the pathological evaluation is suboptimal (not sufficient to make a diagnosis). Given the weight loss and existing pathological data, he should be re-evaluated by a center experienced in hematology, medical oncology, and hematopathology."

NO EVIDENCE OF ACTIVE DISEASE (LEUKEMIA AND LYMPHOMA) FOUND

In the relevant Specialized Board's opinion dated July 16, 2025, it was noted that Çalık would be re-evaluated after being referred to a full-fledged training and research hospital or university hospital for admission, undergoing necessary examinations and treatment, and submitting a health board report showing his final status including expert opinions, along with the requested test results.

The medical documents for Çalık's admission and discharge between July 19 and August 6, 2025, at İzmir City Hospital included findings that "Çalık's ECG and kidney function tests were normal; Medical Oncology found no evidence of recurrence or metastasis regarding mucoepidermoid carcinoma (salivary gland tumor); on July 21, his body weight was 84 kilograms and height was 183 centimeters, with a body mass index calculated at 25.1 (normal range 18.5-24.9); the bone marrow biopsy performed on July 25 showed a blast ratio of 2 percent, with no findings related to atypical (abnormal) cells or malignancy, and he was evaluated as being in hematological remission (no evidence of active disease)."

The report stated that on August 4, Çalık's body weight was 85 kilograms and his body mass index was 25.5, noting that he had gained weight and his general health condition was good.

IT WAS RECORDED THAT A DECISION WAS MADE FOR HIS DISCHARGE

The opinion indicated that while Çalık has diverticula in his large intestine, there were no tomography findings suggestive of diverticulitis. It was also noted that tests conducted for weight loss showed no pathological findings, and no mental illness was detected under Article 16 of the Law on the Execution of Penal and Security Measures No. 5275.

The same opinion stated that Çalık's general condition is good, his vitals are stable, and a decision was made for his discharge. In the opinion issued by the relevant Specialized Board of the Council of Forensic Medicine, it was reported that when evaluating the bone marrow morphological, pathological, immunophenotypic, and genetic examinations together, no pathological findings suggestive of leukemia, lymphoma, or myelodysplasia were detected in the individual.

The opinion concluded, "Based on the current medical documents and test results in the file, as well as examination findings, no health-related impediment has been identified for Mehmet Murat Çalık to remain in prison conditions, provided that his treatment and recommended regular outpatient check-ups are maintained."
