Forest fire in Eceabat, Çanakkale: 57th Regiment Martyrs' Memorial and Conkbayırı closed to visitors

Forest fire in Eceabat, Çanakkale: 57th Regiment Martyrs' Memorial and Conkbayırı closed to visitors

A fire broke out for an as-yet-undetermined reason in a forested area near the village of Büyükanafarta in the historic Gallipoli Peninsula.

Following the report of the fire, teams from the Çanakkale Regional Directorate of Forestry were dispatched to the scene.

Upon reaching the area, the teams began aerial and ground firefighting efforts to bring the blaze under control.

Two forestry workers who were injured in a collision with a car while traveling to the scene in a pickup truck with license plate 17 AAC 399 were taken to Eceabat State Hospital by 112 Emergency Health teams. It was learned that the general health condition of the injured is good.

Some forestry workers affected by smoke were also taken to the same hospital for treatment.

Gendarmerie teams distributed water to the workers fighting the fire.

In a statement made by the Gallipoli Historical Site Presidency of the Çanakkale Wars, it was reported that measures regarding visits have been taken due to the fire.

The statement said, "Due to the ongoing forest fire in the vicinity of Eceabat district, entries to the Northern Line of the Historical Site (Kabatepe Day-Use Area, Sunken Ship, Mimoza, 57th Regiment, Conkbayırı) have been stopped until further notice."

STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR: NO SITUATION REQUIRING EVACUATION

Çanakkale Governor Ömer Toraman stated in a post on his social media account that the fire does not pose a risk to residential areas.

Stating that all teams, especially the forestry organization, are working diligently, Toraman shared the information that, "The forest fire is being intervened in from the air with 8 planes and 12 helicopters, and from the ground with 51 water tenders and 780 personnel."

In a statement made by the Provincial Disaster and Emergency Management (AFAD) Directorate, it was reported that vehicle and personnel support from surrounding provinces and districts, as well as public institutions and organizations, is being provided for the fight against the fire.

The statement announced that there is no situation in residential areas that would require evacuation due to the fire.

The teams' extinguishing efforts in the region are ongoing.
