Former Çankaya Deputy Mayor Gülsün Bor dies by suicide

In Ankara, Gülsün Bor, who resigned from her position as Deputy Mayor of Çankaya before the March 31 local elections to become a CHP Çankaya mayoral candidate, has ended her life.

According to a report by Saygı Öztürk from Sözcü, Bor ended her life by jumping from the 11th floor of the apartment building where she was staying.

SHE WAS MARRIED AND A MOTHER OF ONE

Gülsün Bor, who served as Deputy Mayor of Çankaya between 2014 and 2024, was married and a mother of one child.

It was reported that Gülsün Bor, the daughter of the late governor and member of parliament Yılmaz Cemal Bor who passed away in 2014, had spent time with her mother and sister before taking her own life.

WHO IS GÜLSÜN BOR?

Born in Ankara in 1974, Gülsün Bor was the child of an administrator and father who served as a 16th-term CHP Niğde MP, and a mother who was a teacher. She had a 15-year-old son. After completing her middle school education at TED Ankara College, she continued her high school education at Ankara Atatürk Anatolian High School. In 1996, she graduated from the Department of Finance at the Faculty of Political Sciences of Ankara University.

She began her professional career in 1997 as an Assistant Specialist at the Undersecretariat of Treasury. In her early years, she worked in the Cash and Budget Monitoring Department of the General Directorate of Public Finance.

She became a Treasury Specialist in 2000 after preparing a thesis on the 'Measurement of the Effectiveness and Performance of Public Expenditures' and successfully defending it. That same year, she went to the USA with a Treasury scholarship to pursue a master's degree in finance at George Washington University.

After completing her master's degree, she worked as a short-term consultant at the World Bank. In 2003, she returned to Turkey and served as a Branch Manager in the Internal Debt Management Department of the General Directorate of Public Finance at the Undersecretariat of Treasury.

In 2010, she was appointed as an Economic Counselor to the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Washington, D.C., and served in this role for three years. During this tenure, she was responsible for the promotion and execution of Turkey's economic policies in the international arena.

In 2013, she returned to her position at the Undersecretariat of Treasury and worked as a remote consultant for the International Monetary Fund. Within the scope of this role, she managed and successfully completed the Cash Management Development project for the Mongolian Ministry of Finance. Following her experience at the central government and international levels, she took office as Deputy Mayor at Çankaya Municipality in 2014 to serve the country's local governments.

During this tenure, she assumed responsibilities in various directorates of the municipality and gained experience in many different fields. In December 2023, she resigned from her position as Deputy Mayor of Çankaya, which she had held for 10 years, and announced her candidacy for Mayor of Çankaya, but was not selected.

Gülsün Bor passed away on May 23, 2024.
