Former Supreme Court President Mehmet Akarca elected as Chief Ombudsman
Former Supreme Court President Mehmet Akarca was elected as the new Chief Ombudsman with 264 votes in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) General Assembly, succeeding Şeref Malkoç, whose term ends on December 5.
An election was held today in the TBMM General Assembly for the seat of Chief Ombudsman Şeref Malkoç, whose term expires on December 5. In the fourth round of the election held on October 24 by the joint commission consisting of members of the TBMM Petition Commission and the Human Rights Inquiry Commission, Mehmet Akarca, the former President of the Supreme Court, along with Şinasi Yurdakul and Burhanettin Sağsöz, had become the candidates for Chief Ombudsman after receiving the absolute majority of votes.
Mehmet Akarca, who received 264 out of 276 votes cast in the fourth round of the voting held in the TBMM General Assembly, will assume the office of Chief Ombudsman on December 5. The other candidate, Burhanettin Sağsöz, did not receive any votes in the fourth round.
The term of Şeref Malkoç, who was first elected as Chief Ombudsman by the TBMM General Assembly on November 15, 2016, and subsequently on November 11, 2020, will end on December 5.
Mehmet Akarca had lost the Supreme Court presidency elections to Ömer Kerkez in the 37th round.
