Former Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye Cahit Karakaş has passed away
Cahit Karakaş, one of the former Speakers of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye (TBMM), has passed away in Ankara at the age of 97. Speaker of the Grand National Assembly Numan Kurtulmuş shared a message of condolence on his social media account.
A ceremony will be held for Karakaş at the Parliament on Thursday, September 11. Following the ceremony, Karakaş's body will be laid to rest at the State Cemetery after the funeral prayer to be held at the Ahmet Hamdi Akseki Mosque following the noon prayer.
Speaker of the Grand National Assembly Numan Kurtulmuş, in his condolence message shared on his social media account, stated, "I have learned with sadness of the passing of the 13th Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, Mr. Cahit Karakaş. I wish God's mercy upon the deceased and extend my condolences to his family and loved ones."
Who is Cahit Karakaş?
Cahit Karakaş was born in Bartın in 1928. A graduate of the Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Civil Engineering, Karakaş worked as a survey, project, and control engineer at the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works and the Ministry of Public Works.
Having resigned from his position as the Director of the Port Construction Technical Committee of the Ministry of Public Works, Karakaş was elected as a Zonguldak Deputy from the Justice Party in the 13th and 14th Term General Elections, and from the Republican People's Party in the 15th and 16th Terms.
Cahit Karakaş served as the Minister of Public Works between March 26, 1971, and November 10, 1971, and as the Minister of Transport between November 10, 1971, and December 11, 1971, in the 33rd Government.
Cahit Karakaş was elected Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye on November 17, 1977, and held this position until the September 12, 1980, coup. Elected as a Zonguldak Deputy for the 17th Term in the 1983 general elections, Karakaş served in international parliamentary organizations throughout his tenure as a deputy.
