Furkan Karabay released
Gerçek Gündem editor Furkan Karabay was released following today's release order.
Gerçek Gündem editor Furkan Karabay, who was arrested for reporting on the court transcript of a case involving Barış Saral from the Sarallar group, has been ordered to be released.
RELEASE ORDER
Furkan Karabay's lawyers filed an appeal with the Istanbul 7th Criminal Court of Peace on January 2 regarding his detention status. The petition also cited numerous precedent cases filed against journalists that resulted in acquittals.
The court, having reviewed the lawyers' appeal, issued a release order for Karabay.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Furkan Karabay, who was called to the police station to receive a notification and was subsequently detained, was referred to the court with a request for arrest after giving his statement to the prosecutor at the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan. The court had issued an arrest warrant for journalist Karabay.
The report that served as the basis for Karabay's detention described events that took place during a hearing by quoting from the court transcript. Because a prosecutor's name was mentioned in the transcript and the report, Karabay was charged with "targeting a person involved in the fight against terrorism" and "slander."
