3.5 magnitude earthquake in Bursa! Critical warning from experts
A 3.5 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Mustafakemalpaşa district of Bursa on April 7, 2025. While there was no loss of life or property, experts drew attention to the risk posed by Bursa's active fault lines. Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz and Prof. Dr. Naci Görür issued warnings by recalling the region's major historical earthquakes. Here are the details...
The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that the 3.5 magnitude earthquake, which occurred at 20:39 in the Mustafakemalpaşa district of Bursa, took place at a depth of 6.99 kilometers. It was stated that the earthquake was recorded at 40.10583 North latitude and 28.56889 East longitude.
WARNING FROM EXPERTS
Geological Engineer Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz pointed out that active faults pass through and around Bursa and stated the following:
“This earthquake should serve as a warning for Bursa. The city needs to be made earthquake-ready. Two devastating earthquakes occurred in the region in 1855. The approximately 200 years that have passed are noteworthy in terms of timing for a major earthquake.”
IS THERE A CONNECTION TO THE MARMARA EARTHQUAKE?
When asked whether such earthquakes would trigger the expected major earthquake in the Marmara region, Tüysüz replied, “It will not affect it, but the construction and soil conditions in Bursa must be taken into consideration.”
He emphasized that the city is among the high-risk regions in terms of earthquake scenarios.
Earth Scientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was the Nilüfer district and that it occurred within the Uluabat Fault Zone. Görür issued the following warning:
“This fault zone accumulates stress slowly. We cannot know when such faults will rupture, but detailed geological studies must be conducted. If we recall the 1855 earthquake, we need to take another look at Bursa's earthquake history.”
EARTHQUAKE WARNINGS FOR THE MARMARA REGION ARE INCREASING
Experts emphasize that the Marmara region carries a high risk in terms of earthquakes and that every tremor should therefore be treated with seriousness. Calls are being made for more work to be done regarding both soil surveys and urban transformation.
