5-year-old Deniz died during dental treatment: Chain of negligence explained one by one

5-year-old Deniz Sönmez, who fell ill during dental treatment at a private clinic in Bursa on November 10, passed away 3 days after being rushed to the hospital.

Within the scope of the investigation launched upon her family's claims of "negligence," a comprehensive report was prepared by the 8th Specialized Forensic Medicine Board of Istanbul.

In the 50-page report prepared by a 12-member expert board, the instances of negligence and medical errors that led to little Deniz's death were described in detail.

According to the report, anesthesiologist Levent O.'s decision to delegate his duties to anesthesia technician Gül K. during the treatment and leave the clinic was evaluated as a serious act of negligence.

Additionally, the failure to provide a consent form to the family and the application of unnecessary stitches during the dental procedure were included in the report as other significant shortcomings in the treatment process.

The failure to stop the bleeding during the tooth extraction and the lack of necessary medical checks were also cited among the factors that paved the way for the fatal outcome.

According to the report by Sabah, following Deniz's death, her family reiterated their trust that the state and the justice system would punish this negligence and demanded that steps be taken to ensure a similar incident does not happen again.

The grieving father, Aydın Sönmez, stated, "Our state cannot ignore such negligence; there must be a penalty for this," adding that they would continue to follow the process.
