AKP front explains: When will the terrorist organization PKK lay down its arms?

The decision of the terrorist organization PKK to lay down its arms and the process of its dissolution have moved to the top of Turkey's political agenda. Following the call made by MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli to the terrorist organization's leader Abdullah Öcalan to "make the PKK lay down its arms," the response from the organization's front and the decision to dissolve have indicated that a new era has begun in the process.

While there is curiosity about when and how the weapons will be laid down, a new statement regarding the process has come from the AKP front. In his assessment to members of the press, AKP Deputy Chairman Efkan Ala provided comprehensive information regarding both the security process and the political dimension.

''TURKEY IS PREPARING FOR A FUTURE WITHOUT TERROR''

Stating that Turkey has taken significant steps toward the goal of a "country without terror," Ala claimed that a positive climate has currently formed regarding the PKK's disarmament process. Ala noted that they anticipate this process could be completed by the summer months.

Expressing that the state's relevant institutions are active in the field to ensure the process is not exploited and to prevent potential provocations, Ala emphasized that security units, in particular, are managing the process meticulously. Stating in his remarks that reports from the MİT and other institutions are awaited, Ala said that this process is being carried out step by step.

WHEN WILL PARLIAMENT BE INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS?

Touching upon the proposal brought to the agenda by MHP Chairman Bahçeli to establish a commission in Parliament, Ala said that this step would be taken after the security institutions complete their technical work.

CALL FOR CONSENSUS ON A NEW CONSTITUTION

At the end of his statement, Efkan Ala expressed that Turkey needs a new constitution and said that all political parties must be in agreement during the constitutional process. Noting that even though the AKP has a majority, they want to act together with the opposition, Ala spoke as follows:

“The new constitution needs to encompass not just the ruling party, but all segments of society. Even if we have the opportunity to draft a constitution on our own, we want to do it together with the opposition. A constitution approved by broad segments will pave the way for Turkey and contribute to sustainable development.”
