Another blow to Şimşek from Yeni Şafak: This time it strikes by 'showing the way'

The tension between Yeni Şafak and Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek, which has become one of the most prominent indicators of the conflicts within the AKP government, is escalating day by day.

The newspaper, which is under the control of the Albayrak family, has been one of the leading media outlets to make the harshest criticisms against the economic policies implemented by Şimşek in recent months.

Yeni Şafak, which has targeted Şimşek particularly over his interest rate hike policies, has continued its front-page criticisms with new content over the past week.

Yeni Şafak softened its tone while continuing its criticisms in today's issue. In the headline titled "The remedy for invasion is customs duty," it was argued that high customs duties, similar to those implemented by the US during the Trump era, should be put into effect to close the current account deficit caused by imports.

In the report, with the phrase "1 billion dollars of investment is made every month, the current account deficit decreases," a path contrary to the free trade approach implemented directly by Şimşek was proposed. This was interpreted as another criticism made under the guise of "showing the way."

The tension between Yeni Şafak and Mehmet Şimşek is on the agenda not only in economic circles but also in politics. CHP Chairman Özgür Özel spoke about this conflict within the government in a statement he made recently.

Özel stated, "I recommend Yeni Şafak to those who are curious about the confusion within the party. Let them take the headline of Yeni Şafak and stomp on it. Yeni Şafak's support is for the 'Son-in-Law'... The Son-in-Law is hitting Mehmet Şimşek with a club through the hands of Yeni Şafak."
