Balıkesir and Marmara forecast from Şener Üşümezsoy: Is a major earthquake expected?

The 6.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred yesterday in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir was felt across a large part of the Marmara Region, especially in Istanbul. It was reported that 1 person lost their life and 29 people were injured in the earthquake.

AFAD announced that over 100 aftershocks have been recorded in the region following the main tremor.

STATEMENT FROM ÜŞÜMEZSOY

Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy made statements to Sözcü TV regarding the Sındırgı earthquake. Şener Üşümezsoy stated that the tremor occurred on the Simav Fault Zone and that this was an expected situation.

Üşümezsoy explained that the Simav mountain is rising and the Simav plain in front of it is collapsing, which resulted in the earthquake.

"IT WILL NOT BE LARGER THAN 6.5"

Emphasizing that the tremor was a normal fault rupture, Üşümezsoy said, "A 20-25 kilometer fault has ruptured" in the region where the earthquake occurred. Stating that an earthquake larger than 6.4 or 6.5 cannot occur on these faults, Üşümezsoy said that for a major earthquake to occur, a large fault line of over 80 km would need to rupture.
