STATEMENT FROM ÜŞÜMEZSOY

Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy made statements to Sözcü TV regarding the Sındırgı earthquake. Şener Üşümezsoy stated that the tremor occurred on the Simav Fault Zone and that this was an expected situation.

Emphasizing that the tremor was a normal fault rupture, Üşümezsoy said, "A 20-25 kilometer fault has ruptured" in the region where the earthquake occurred. Stating that an earthquake larger than 6.4 or 6.5 cannot occur on these faults, Üşümezsoy said that for a major earthquake to occur, a large fault line of over 80 km would need to rupture.
