A comprehensive study published in the journal Science last December revealed that a significant amount of energy has accumulated in the locked section of the North Anatolian Fault under the Sea of Marmara, pointing to a major earthquake risk for Istanbul.

While scientists state that the energy accumulated in the fault segment, which has not ruptured since 1766, is approaching a critical threshold, the views of some earth scientists who argue that there are no active faults left to rupture in the Sea of Marmara have also sparked public debate.

GÖRÜR'S CRITICISM OF THE SCIENTIFIC WORLD

As the repercussions of the study continue, Prof. Dr. Naci Görür made harsh criticisms of the scientific world in a post on his X account. Görür stated, "The scientific world is kicking the can down the road without doing what is necessary."

In his statement, Görür reminded that the Sea of Marmara was formed by earthquakes as an inland sea, emphasizing that this structure was last examined in detail in 1999. Stating that the missing points need to be completed, Görür expressed that scientific studies must be continuous.

Drawing attention to the seriousness of scientific discourse, Prof. Dr. Naci Görür stated that research should be supported not only by words but by publications. Pointing to the importance of scientific production being readable and verifiable in the international arena, Görür stated that otherwise, the statements made would not be taken seriously.

HE RAISED THE "DEADLY QUESTION"

Stating that the fault system in and around Marmara is clearly visible, Görür noted that the real problem is how this information is evaluated. Reminding that Istanbul has experienced many earthquakes of 7.0 or greater throughout history, Görür drew attention with these words:

"You must have heard that there have been many earthquakes over 7.0 in this city throughout history. Now the deadly question: Why don't we examine the earthquake system of Istanbul or any other place and make those places earthquake-resistant?"

While the research found wide coverage in the international press, it was emphasized that the probability of a 7.4 magnitude earthquake occurring on the Marmara Fault is "quite high." Experts warn that such an earthquake that could occur in Istanbul could be one of the most severe humanitarian disasters in recent history.
