Diyanet's appetite knows no bounds: After the rent and Audi scandal, now allegations of a villa in Australia!
The purchase of a villa in Australia for 15 million TL by the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation and its luxury investments in the US have sparked backlash among politicians and the public. The IYI Party has brought the issue to the agenda of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM).
Luxury real estate purchases abroad by the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation, affiliated with the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), have sparked controversy.
Most recently, a villa located at 15 King St, Dallas, in the Australian city of Melbourne, was purchased for 702,500 dollars (approximately 15 million TL). The villa was acquired through an auction, and this development has been criticized by politicians and the public.
REACTION FROM IYI PARTY'S ÇÖMEZ
IYI Party Group Deputy Chairman Turhan Çömez brought the issue to the Turkish Grand National Assembly, stating, "While people in earthquake-stricken regions are struggling to survive in difficult conditions in containers, it is unacceptable for Diyanet to purchase a luxury villa."
AKP Istanbul MP Nurettin Alan responded to these criticisms by saying, "Is it a crime? What if they bought it?" Meanwhile, AKP Group Deputy Chairman Emin Akbaşoğlu stated that it is the duty of the courts to evaluate whether there is any situation contrary to the law.
LUXURY INVESTMENTS ON THE AGENDA
Diyanet's real estate investments in the US have also caused debate. Among the investments in Washington, which have a total value exceeding 4 billion liras, are luxury structures such as five villas, a swimming pool, a Turkish bath, and a restaurant.
IT WAS REVEALED THAT HE PAID 1,404 TL IN RENT
It was also revealed in recent days that the President of Religious Affairs, Ali Erbaş, was residing in a three-story villa while paying 1,404 TL in rent.
