Earthquake risk in İzmir is increasing! Frightening warning from Naci Görür: 7 and above...

Recent earthquakes in the Aegean Sea have brought Turkey's active fault map back to the agenda. Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür made striking statements regarding İzmir in particular during his appearance on the KAFA TV YouTube channel.

DO EARTHQUAKES IN THE AEGEAN AFFECT İZMİR?

Evaluating the earthquake danger in İzmir, Görür stated that the city is located on many active fault lines and said, "All earthquakes that occur in the Aegean affect İzmir."

Görür emphasized that not only the Aegean, but also earthquakes occurring in the Eastern Mediterranean, Manisa, and the Büyük Menderes Graben have a major impact on İzmir.

"AN EARTHQUAKE IS INEVITABLE"

Stating that İzmir is constantly affected by the large fault lines surrounding it, Görür said that the city is located in an extraordinarily sensitive region in terms of earthquakes.

"There are two large grabens to the east of İzmir: the Gediz and Büyük Menderes Grabens. The İzmir Peninsula is intersected by numerous active faults. These faults move slowly, but they can produce large earthquakes in the long term."

HE REVEALED İZMİR'S DANGEROUS AREA

Stating that the delta regions in Bayraklı and its surroundings have a weak soil structure, Görür emphasized that these areas are the ones that will be most affected by seismic waves.

IT CAN PRODUCE A MAGNITUDE 7 EARTHQUAKE

Drawing attention to the Güzelbahçe Fault, Görür stated that the fault is 24 kilometers long and warned that it could produce an earthquake of around magnitude 7. Stating that the most important fault line is the İzmir Fault, Görür noted that it has not yet been activated.

Görür added the following warning to his words:

"If you follow the İzmir fault, it joins the main fault on the southern flank of the Gediz graben. This is a very large fault, it can produce a very large earthquake, and it cuts directly through İzmir. The fact that there are so many active faults in İzmir means this region must be handled with great care."

AT LEAST 15 FAULTS IN İZMİR CAN PRODUCE EARTHQUAKES OF 7 AND ABOVE

Stating that there are at least 15 faults in İzmir with the risk of producing earthquakes of magnitude 7 or greater, Görür noted that sufficient studies have not been conducted on when these faults will rupture.

"We have no information on when these will produce earthquakes. Because we are not working on it. It is certain that they will produce earthquakes, but the mentality of 'Let the earthquake happen first, then we will do what is necessary' still persists."

Pointing out that İzmir has historically experienced major earthquakes, Görür warned, "If an earthquake of 7 or greater occurred in Erzincan, add 250 to 1939; you say that I roughly expect such a large earthquake in this area. The last earthquake in Adapazarı was in 1967; add 250, and I roughly see the same large earthquake on that date. We do not know when these 10-15 faults in İzmir will produce earthquakes; that is where the fear lies."
