Earthquake risk in the Marmara region is increasing: Experts issue critical warnings for Istanbul

Recent earthquakes in the Sea of Marmara have increased anxiety in the region. Yesterday, a 3.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded off the coast of Tekirdağ. Potential major earthquake scenarios in the Marmara Region, which seismologists frequently warn about, have come to the fore once again.

EARTHQUAKE COMMENTARY FROM AN EXPERT

Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan stated that the rupture of the fault line in the Marmara is inevitable, but said that sufficient stress has not yet accumulated. Ercan made the following remarks:

"An earthquake will undoubtedly occur in the North Marmara one day. However, there is currently no scientific evidence that the Earth's crust in the Marmara has reached sufficient tension to break the ground."

Ercan also emphasized that population density has made Istanbul unlivable, arguing that reverse migration should be encouraged.

7.5-MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE WARNING FROM NACİ GÖRÜR

Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Naci Görür drew attention to the energy accumulating on the Kumburgaz Fault off the coast of Silivri and the Adalar Fault near the Princes' Islands. Görür described the potential scenarios as follows:

If the Kumburgaz Fault ruptures, an earthquake of at least 7.2 magnitude is expected.

If both the Kumburgaz and Adalar faults rupture, the magnitude of this earthquake could reach 7.5.

Görür stated that 60 percent of the structures in Istanbul are earthquake-resistant, but the risk remains significant.

POTENTIAL EARTHQUAKE WILL AFFECT 11 PROVINCES

Experts warn that a potential Istanbul earthquake could affect not only the city but also 11 surrounding provinces.

This situation increases concerns regarding the future of millions of people living in the Marmara Region.
