Earthquake storm in the Aegean Sea! Local residents are leaving the island

Seismic activity in the Aegean Sea continues today. Successive earthquakes are occurring northeast of Greece's tourist destination, Santorini Island. The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported that the number of tremors recorded in the earthquake swarm has exceeded 400.

In a statement from AFAD, it was noted that developments are being closely monitored. Tremors in the region are ongoing.

TWO MORE MAJOR EARTHQUAKES OCCURRED

According to the latest information on the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) website, a 4.7 magnitude tremor with its epicenter in the Aegean Sea was recorded at 11:13.

Following this tremor, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in the Aegean Sea was recorded at 11:38.

Subsequently, at two-minute intervals, earthquakes of 4.3 magnitude occurred at 11:40 and 11:42. It was determined that all three earthquakes occurred at a depth of 7 kilometers.

THE MAGNITUDE OF THE EARTHQUAKES IS INCREASING

Another earthquake has occurred in the Aegean Sea, which has been shaking for days. According to data provided by the Kandilli Observatory, another 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Aegean Sea. It was announced that the tremor took place 5 kilometers below the surface.

THE 5.1 MAGNITUDE QUAKE WAS ALSO FELT IN TURKEY

The 5.1 magnitude earthquake was also felt in the coastal districts of İzmir, Aydın, and Muğla. Following the tremor, which caused brief panic, officials announced that there have been no negative reports so far.

RESIDENTS ARE LEAVING SANTORINI

According to a report by Haberler.com, residents of Santorini Island, located in the region where over 400 earthquakes have occurred in the last 6 days, have begun to leave the island. Anxiety is growing in the region, where experts are pointing to volcanic eruption activity.

WILL THE EARTHQUAKES AFFECT TURKEY?

Meanwhile, the seismic activity is also being closely monitored from Turkey. AFAD Earthquake Department Head Prof. Dr. Aykut Akgün responded to the question, "To what extent could the earthquakes affect Turkey?" Akgün stated that the earthquakes in the region are natural.

Stating that the earthquakes are occurring in a normal location but that we are facing a process outside of normal activity, Akgün noted the following:

"According to the current data we have received, this can be called an 'earthquake swarm.' We are talking about successive earthquakes of certain magnitudes close to each other. We know that the volcanic activity here is fresh. We do not have any data suggesting that the onset of volcanic activity is causing these earthquakes. If it were, we would not be surprised because the area is one that could develop active volcanism. This could either dissipate or increase to some extent. It is not possible to say anything definitive. It is important to remain vigilant by observing continuously."
