Earthquake warning for Istanbul from Naci Görür! He warned of '7 or higher'

Stating that Turkey must now face the reality of earthquakes, Prof. Dr. Naci Görür emphasized that the main issue is not whether an earthquake will occur, but how prepared we are for it.

'AN INEVITABLE FACT OF NATURE'

Görür said, “It is pointless to argue about whether an earthquake will happen. This is an inevitable fact of nature. What matters is to take the necessary precautions before this fact turns into a disaster.”

Prof. Dr. Naci Görür reminded once again that Turkey is located on active fault lines and expressed that the warnings made by scientists after the 1999 Gölcük and Düzce earthquakes were not taken into account sufficiently.

Describing earthquakes as the pulse of nature, Prof. Dr. Naci Görür emphasized that these events stem from the internal dynamics of the Earth and are inevitable.

'WE MUST LEARN TO LIVE IN HARMONY'

“You cannot prevent earthquakes, you cannot change fault lines with prayers. An earthquake is the Earth's breathing. If this stops, the world also loses its life. Therefore, instead of trying to stop nature, we must learn to live in harmony with it,” he said.

Drawing attention to the three active fault segments in the Sea of Marmara, Prof. Dr. Naci Görür issued warnings, focusing particularly on the Kumburgaz fault.

'ALL MARMARA COASTS WILL BE AFFECTED'

Stating that a large part of this approximately 75-kilometer-long line has not yet broken, Görür said, “The 1999 earthquakes transferred significant stress to these faults. Currently, in the Marmara, the Kumburgaz segment in particular is ready to break.

And when this segment breaks, it has the potential to produce an earthquake of over 7. This means that all Marmara coasts, especially Istanbul, will be directly affected.”

Making assessments specifically regarding Silivri, Prof. Dr. Naci Görür pointed out that the soil structure of the region carries serious risks.

Emphasizing that loose and water-saturated soils amplify earthquake waves instead of absorbing them, creating a more destructive effect on structures, Görür said, “Faulty construction on such soils leads to heavy damage in an earthquake. To avoid experiencing in Silivri what we experienced in Avcılar in 1999, multi-faceted planning must be done, starting with soil surveys.”

Emphasizing that an earthquake-resistant city cannot be built only with sturdy buildings, Prof. Dr. Naci Görür stated that urban resilience should be handled with a holistic approach covering all infrastructure and living spaces.

“Everything from roads to bridges, infrastructure to hospitals, schools to public buildings must be built with the earthquake in mind. Only then can a city be resilient. This is not just a construction issue, but a matter of mentality and management,” he said.

He concluded his speech as follows: “Asking whether an earthquake will happen in this country is like asking whether it will rain. Of course it will. Our issue is about how we will get through it.

If we are prepared, we will not turn this natural event into a disaster. But if we are negligent, then it is not the earthquake, but negligence that kills.”
