Final stage reached in execution regulation: Preparations for release in prisons! Covers 50 thousand people

The final stage has been reached in the new execution package prepared through the joint efforts of the Ministry of Justice and the AKP. With this regulation, it is expected that 45 to 50 thousand inmates will be released under probation.

The package aims to be enacted and enter into force before Eid al-Adha.

Inmates convicted of certain crimes committed before July 31, 2023, will be able to transition to open prisons three years earlier.

Those currently in open prisons will be released and will complete the remainder of their sentences under probation. However, this process requires every inmate to be subjected to a detailed evaluation.

According to the report by Yücel Kayaoğlu from Türkiye Gazetesi, inmates who wish to benefit from the early release opportunity must receive a positive report from prison observation boards.

These boards will examine the inmates' behavior within the prison, their level of remorse, and their participation in social projects.

The doors to release will remain closed for individuals whose psychological tendencies pose a danger or who are assessed as being prone to crime.

WHAT ARE THE EXECUTION CONDITIONS?

Special execution conditions are also included in the package. The possibility of home confinement will be provided for pregnant women, mothers with young children, the elderly, the disabled, and inmates with serious illnesses. Inmates in this group will be able to complete a certain portion of their sentences at home.

Following the Constitutional Court's annulment of the legal provision regarding those who commit crimes on behalf of an organization without being a member of the organization, no new regulation is expected on this matter.

AKP sources state that it is difficult to develop a new formula in this area. Individuals in this situation will be evaluated within the framework of existing anti-terrorism laws.
