Frightening warning from Ahmet Ercan after Kütahya earthquake: 'This is the main earthquake!'
The 5.4 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Kütahya was felt in İzmir, Istanbul, and surrounding provinces. Following the earthquake, experts made notable statements regarding aftershocks and potential major earthquakes.
A 5.4-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Simav district of Kütahya. The earthquake was also felt intensely in surrounding provinces such as Istanbul, İzmir, Bursa, Balıkesir, Uşak, Eskişehir, and Bilecik.
FRIGHTENING WARNING FROM PROF. DR. AHMET ERCAN
Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan, who drew attention with his statements following the earthquake, stated that the earthquake in Kütahya was the main shock. Expressing that the Simav-Sındırgı fault line is under stress, Ercan warned that the intensity of aftershocks could reach up to 4.9.
Speaking on a live broadcast on Halk TV, Ercan said, "This earthquake appears to be the main shock. Aftershocks will be seen. These aftershocks could reach up to 4.9. It creates the impression that the earthquakes will last longer. My advice to citizens is to stay outside and spend the night outdoors..."
AFTERSHOCKS WILL CONTINUE
In addition to Ercan, earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Süleyman Pampal also stated that long-term aftershocks would be experienced in the region. Pampal said, "There are constant aftershocks. Thousands of aftershocks occurred following a 6.1-magnitude main earthquake. With the rupture of the Sındırgı fault, 5-magnitude aftershocks were experienced. This is a situation in the nature of an earthquake storm that is effective over a wide area." Pampal stated that aftershocks between 4 and 6 in magnitude are more likely across the region, while the probability of a 6-7 magnitude main earthquake is low.
Pampal noted that aftershocks are expected to continue and that this situation could last for days or even weeks.
"Constant tremors may be experienced. The stressing of faults can cause small earthquakes in the region to increase before a major earthquake," he said. Experts urged citizens to be cautious against all kinds of tremors during this process and to live in sturdy structures.
FELT IN THE REGION AND SURROUNDING PROVINCES
The 5.4-magnitude earthquake in Kütahya was also felt significantly in surrounding provinces. In provinces such as İzmir, Istanbul, Balıkesir, Bursa, Uşak, Eskişehir, and Bilecik, the earthquake manifested itself with slight shaking in buildings and homes. However, it has been reported that there has been no loss of life or property so far.
