Gives a date for the major Marmara earthquake! 'There is a 200-year delay'
Speaking after the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Silivri, Japanese earthquake expert Yoshinori Moriwaki gave a date for the major earthquake expected in the Marmara region. Here are the details...
Following the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Istanbul yesterday, Japanese earthquake expert Yoshinori Moriwaki made assessments regarding the seismic risks in the Marmara region.
Moriwaki issued a striking warning, stating, "There is a 60 percent probability of a major earthquake in the Marmara region within 30 years."
Stating that the epicenter of the earthquake was off the coast of Silivri in the Central Marmara Trough, Moriwaki noted that aftershocks could continue in the coming days, saying, "One should be careful, especially for a week; aftershocks may be seen during this process."
THERE IS A 200-YEAR EARTHQUAKE DELAY
Moriwaki stated that there is also a serious risk in the southern branch of the Marmara, saying, "There is an approximately 200-year earthquake delay on the Düzce, Bursa, Balıkesir, and Çanakkale line. This means that the earthquake risk in these regions is high."
TSUNAMI RISK WARNING
Drawing attention to the northern branch of the Marmara, Moriwaki stated that the line extending from Gebze to the Central Marmara Fault is particularly dangerous.
Moriwaki said, "Regions with soft soil such as Avcılar and Büyükçekmece felt the earthquake in Silivri more intensely. Because the soil is weak in these regions, building safety is of vital importance. Furthermore, there is also a tsunami risk in the Marmara. Yeşilköy, Avcılar, and Büyükçekmece are critical regions in this respect as well."
CALL FOR URGENT MEASURES
Making striking warnings regarding the building stock in Turkey, Moriwaki stated that a large portion of existing buildings are uncontrolled and continued his words as follows:
"50 percent of the buildings in Turkey are illegal and uninspected. The state and municipalities must take action on this issue urgently. Strengthening works must be carried out, especially in regions where the soil structure is weak."
