His grave had been opened: Investigation into Cem Garipoğlu's death concluded
The investigation launched into claims that Münevver Karabulut's murderer, Cem Garipoğlu, did not commit suicide and is still alive has been closed with a decision of non-prosecution following DNA test results.
The Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has issued a decision of non-prosecution in the investigation it launched following claims that Cem Garipoğlu, who murdered Münevver Karabulut in Istanbul's Başakşehir district in 2009 and subsequently committed suicide in prison, did not die, as it has been confirmed that the person in the grave is indeed Cem Garipoğlu.
Upon the request of the Karabulut family, Cem Garipoğlu's grave had been opened. For many years, it had been alleged that Cem Garipoğlu did not actually commit suicide, but had fled abroad, undergone plastic surgery, and changed his identity.
The Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had issued an instruction to the Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office for the exhumation of Cem Garipoğlu's grave.
DNA samples taken from Garipoğlu were compared with buccal swab and blood samples taken from his father, Mehmet Nida, and his mother, Tülay Makbule.
It was revealed that the samples belonged to a DNA profile that matched the mother and father exactly.
Furthermore, it was determined that the blood found on a bag inside the grave did not belong to a human.
