How did the ceasefire between Iran and Israel begin? Qatar stepped in and became the mediator

The crisis, which began with Israel's airstrike targeting Iran on June 13, has ended as of today with a ceasefire. The tension, which escalated after the US struck several strategic points in Iran over the weekend, entered a de-escalation phase following Trump's initiatives.

US President Donald Trump stated on Truth Social, "A full and comprehensive ceasefire has been fully agreed upon between Israel and Iran." Trump claimed that both sides had contacted him directly to call for a ceasefire.

DENIAL FROM IRAN TO TRUMP

Following Trump's statements, the Tehran administration did not remain silent. Iranian officials claimed that Trump's assertions did not reflect the truth and that no such contact had taken place. This situation has increased uncertainties regarding the ceasefire process.

The Qatar-based news channel Al Jazeera has revealed the behind-the-scenes details of the ceasefire agreement. According to the report, Trump first held a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. After the Israeli side was persuaded, Trump contacted the Emir of Qatar.

It was reported that Trump asked the Emir of Qatar to persuade the Iranians, and subsequently, the Prime Minister of Qatar became involved in the process and established contact with Tehran. It was stated that the Iranian side was also persuaded as a result of this mediation and agreed to the ceasefire deal.

According to Al Jazeera's report, US Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff also conducted direct or indirect talks with the Iranians. It was noted that logistical issues were also resolved by this team in coordination with the Prime Minister of Qatar.

Another point highlighted in the report concerned the sustainability of the ceasefire. Al Jazeera reporters drew attention to the uncertainty, stating, "Events unfolded this way, and this ceasefire is now officially in effect. But the real question is: Will the ceasefire last?"

The Israel Defense Forces spokesperson also issued a statement announcing that the ceasefire had come into effect in the morning hours. However, the Israeli side sent a message regarding potential threats, stating, "The air force is on alert, we are ready at any moment."

Former US Ambassador to Ankara James Jeffrey provided assessments to Al Jazeera regarding the process. Jeffrey said, "I have seen dozens of ceasefires in the last 50 years. They all start with confusion at first. Not all soldiers can move simultaneously. But the statement made by the Iranian foreign minister indicates that the process is moving in the right direction."
