Important statement from Şener Üşümezsoy following the earthquake in Balıkesir! Will it trigger an Istanbul earthquake?

An earthquake occurred in Sındırgı, Balıkesir, yesterday evening (October 27) at 22:48. According to AFAD data, the 6.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded at a depth of 5.66 kilometers.

The earthquake was felt in surrounding provinces, primarily in Istanbul, as well as in Izmir, Bursa, and Kocaeli.

Aftershocks were also recorded following the earthquake, which caused great panic. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported that 3 buildings and 1 shop were destroyed in the earthquake, and there was no loss of life.

Following the earthquake, all eyes turned to experts. Connecting to a live broadcast on CNN Türk, Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy stated that this was not an aftershock, but a triggering earthquake.

Prof. Dr. Üşümezsoy continued his statement as follows:

“The continuation of the earthquake I pointed out in Sındırgı is slightly further to the southeast. A 15 km fault had broken, and it had a continuity extending toward the south.

Toward the fault line 7-8 km southeast of Sındırgı. It is an earthquake that occurred in the mountains, not under Sındırgı. What does this mean?

A surface of approximately 100 km is tearing. There had been a further 10-15 km of tearing. This is the growth of aftershocks toward the south, toward a new fault plane.

We had said that the continuous growth of aftershocks toward the south indicates a new fault plane. The people of Sındırgı should not expect a larger earthquake than this.

This earthquake is a part of the previous Balıkesir Sındırgı earthquake. Like the drawers of a dresser. After one broke, the other broke as well. It is not an aftershock, but an earthquake it triggered.

These are earthquakes that formed on the north-south line in the Simav earthquakes. But in the form of an earthquake swarm.
